The Casio G-Shock appears to come in a myriad of shapes, colors, configurations and variants. However, if you’re a fan of the G-Shock, you might find your coveted feature set surprisingly hard to track.Wouldn’t it be cool if you could make your own G-Shock the way you wanted?
As more and more brands enter the trend of online bespoke watch customization, it seems you should be able to do just that — and no watchmaker is better suited to it than Casio.
The Japanese company certainly has the technical ability and a passionate fan base to pull it off.The burgeoning cottage industry of G-Shock modifiers is proving that there is a huge demand for personalized G-Shock and Casio can learn from it.It makes sense for the company, yes – and I really want to create my own perfect G-Shocks.
Most watchmakers’ new versions usually just change the color or highlight of an existing model — like when a designer clicks “color fill” on one or two design elements and sends it to production. The same is true of many G-Shock versions, but the brand’s famous resin casing seems particularly versatile and lends itself to quick adjustments.Display options, technical features like Tough Solar and Multiband 6, highlights and straps — they all look fair and aren’t too difficult to replace.(Casio does offer custom orders for corporate customers who order in bulk, but the process doesn’t seem as fun as creating a unique project using an online tool.
Setting up such a system for online customization of Casio’s G-Shock watch and the production and delivery of products can be challenging — but it has been for a while in other industries (sneakers come to mind), and even in watches. If a well-known brand such as Porsche Design, which uses mechanical watches and materials such as sapphire crystal and titanium, can do it, why not Casio?G-Shock is a brand that should be ahead of the curve in this space, not behind the curve.
G-Shock customization tools would be great, but naturally there are limits. The brand can start with established product lines such as the 5600 and 6900 or newer popular product lines such as the GA2100 ‘Casioak’ rather than the many G-Shocks that continue to develop including (to its credit) fresh shells that go well beyond simple colours and regular changes to the display design.
There’s another reason Casio doesn’t have to worry about undermining its healthy collector and limited-edition market: They can still own a lot of their own designs. The more models, features, and options in this hypothetical tool, the better, but brands curate them intelligently. For example, Casio can reserve graphic designs for their limited edition collaborations with skaters, artists, etc.(From a branding perspective, it’s not ideal for people to just print any picture from their phone onto the band.
Part of the challenge is designing an online user interface, but if any brand can provide a fun and expressive interface for its customers, it’s the Casio G-Shock — one can imagine that new customizable options can now be released as frequently as new watches. Then, consider the hype and social media sharing of people’s own G-Shock “co-op” watches.
That’s what I want, but I’m just one of those people who will go crazy creating my own imagined Casio G-Shock watch — and I won’t be alone.
